Fancy Friday will return this Friday, I’m afraid that I felt that I had said all I had to say in the 50th Fancy Friday - but of course, it is never  simple to just stop writing. I took a long look at my posts since that post, and I feel they have been somewhat… tentative.

I had written another post and published it tonight, but it just wasn’t me at all. Deleted. Started again, and enjoyed it this time.

An unusual post for me - but I do love the concept of a collective of designers coming together in one space, such as in the current ‘Project 51,’ so why not…! They’ve just announced that they’ll be running a Wedding Showcase from now until’ February 28th (Tue- Sat 11am-7pm) at their store in 51 South William Street, Dublin 2.

While I may not be at the wedding situation stage, it doesn’t stop me from appreciating the amazing quality of the work on show - it really is absolutely beautiful.  I particularly love Jennifer Rothwell’s work - the dress above. Other designers include Caaoimhe Keane and Clare O’Connor, alongside jewellery designers such as Eoin McDonnell, Yvonne Ryan and Eily O’Connell.

There will also be hats from Martha Lynn, flowers, event planners and even more designers - so really worth a trip for those amongst you planning your lovely wedding day.

They will be holding a special evening this Thursday (Feb 9th) from 6prn to 8pm to view the showcase , meet everyone, have a drink and there’ll be wedding day style talk by celebrity stylist Clare Devereux.

If you would like to pop along, you’ll be glad to know that the first twenty people to rsvp to rsvp@bespokeevents.ie will be included on the guestlist for the wedding showcase event and can avail of the  a complimentary drink and a luxury goodie bag. Enjoy!

This collection of ‘the end’ images from Fliegender on flickr pleases the typography hound in me…I wish contemporary movies ended with an interesting em..end after the reams of names. I would possibly sit and wait in the dark old cinema, just to see that. And also finish my bucket of popcorn. You know I always order the large one, and yes, I will bring whatever’s left home with me. Day old popcorn equals win.

I love this print, and not jut because the hut on the far left reminds me of Baywatch for some strange reason. I loved that show, I can’t lie.

I first posted about Anne-Sofie Madsen in August 2009, and she recently got in touch to say her Fall 2010 illustrations were now online. I couldn’t click through fast enough, as I am, without question, a fan.  The Danish design school graduate does not disappoint. With a collection entitled ‘Blue Ink’, she has somehow found even more genius within the creative part of her mind to produce these incredible fashion illustrations for her Fall 2010/2011 show.

Visit her site >here< and prepare to feel inspired.

It seems that the last 49 Fancy Fridays took place in times of devastation and delirium - the darkness and the delight. To look at the starkness and survival makes me both fearful and impatient for the future. I know these days are not just in my past but variations on days to come - and so I know that no area is exempt from the external or internal troubles and opportunities that make up every single day for every single one of us.

I see the starkness, yes, and I felt it. Sometimes I felt it so much that I could not imagine any other feeling but the desolation of a lost self. I made a decision to accept no defeat to this part of me and to reclaim all that I recognised to be good in myself, and surround my mind and myself with the situations and people that would encourage the positive.

And now? Now I am so grateful for the smallest of things, for the feeling of the sun on my face through the window - while the wind howls that it can’t do anything to me now but be heard. Mostly I’m grateful for the fact that my life is once again my own, and more so the knowledge that it was never anything but that -  my life. I can always reclaim and return and choose and change.

As much as all of this, all of these words and thoughts, situations and ramblings, as much as it all defined me and continues to be with me - I know that I have reclaimed myself from myself.

A mix of the things important to you, and the things important to me.  The words and images that we’ve thought or loved. There was somewhat of a realisation for me, reading everything, that we all share so many experiences, even though we can feel alone at times in everything. We all feel lost, loved, lost again, loved again, so thank you for being there through my last 49 lost and loved and lost and loved posts - while you were also living yours.

Thank you so much for your input, it was so overwhelming that  part two will be here on Saturday.

Tomorrow is Friday, yes..fair point right? It’s also the day of my 5oth Fancy Friday post. I’m going through all the old ones and collating my favourite images, and adding on the quotes, mottos, thoughts, images and art sent to me by you lovely people over the last few weeks.

If you do have a favourite saying, or something you wrote, an image from the internet you love, or one you took or painted yourself, please do send to me before 6pm Friday, as I’d love to include them. You can leave it in comments below, email me to blanaidhennessy@gmail.com or facebook/tweet me.

Posts can be anonymous or linked to your site/blog! x

Also thank you for all of your support to date, and for reading my fancy Friday ramblings. They are the most personal of scribblings but I write and post them securely in the knowledge that you are such generous people. So thanks for that - it really, genuinely means a lot.

Have become slightly obsessed with spats. I can’t afford any at the moment as they are somewhat pricey - so I cut the ends off an old pair of H&M jeans today and turned them upside down so the knee part came over my shoes. That’ll do for now ’til I get a real pair, and the bonus is they cover the tired old shoes I’m wearing today.  Hope you’re all having a lovely week - I don’t know about you but the dark, dull and dreary weather is somewhat depressing after the cleanliness (yet, yes, scary) snow…

Velvet twist scarf in hair - American Apparel.

Shoulder-padded mahoosive lovely cardigan : vintage.

T-shirt : H&M

Necklace : vintage St. Christopher medal - gift.

My love for Ireland grows with each discovery of new and amazing talent. Thank you to Olga Tiernan from Grafik Fabrik for making me go ‘oh wow!’ when I saw these images of her work.  Instead of rabbiting on about how much I love it - here’s Olga’s answers to some questions! :

“I studied printed textiles in Galway and went on to do a masters in fashion and print at the Glasgow School of Art.  I have lectured as a design tutor in GMIT, and now currently freelance as a designer in Dublin.

I am very much interested in geometry, connecting lines, repeated shapes that form patterns.  I enjoy printing on fabric because there is a resistant of opposites, straight formal shapes on soft and mallable fabrics, often the prints look so much more interesting on fabric than on paper.

My work tends to lend itself more towards interiors due to its aesthetic, but I would love to create more prints for fashion,  I would also love to start working in 3D too but we’ll see how that goes!”

The wallpaper is hand screen printed, available from the Irish Design Shop on Bow Lane East, Dublin 2. The cushions are also available at the Irish Design Shop, and Bow Boutique in Powerscourt Centre. See Olga’s work on Grafik Fabrik >here<

Sorry if one of these images is from your blog/site without credit - I hate to do that but I was like a right-clicking sponge over Christmas, frantically trying to expand my depleted ‘inspired by..!’ folders.  These certainly helped, as did the trip to Berlin. More on that very soon!

Cold cold cold cold cold. Bought the fur in the first image while in Berlin, and the velvet flock shirt. The H&M black t-shirt and leggings were brought to wear as kicking around the apartment gear, but tights were an impossiblity during the days’ jaunts about the cold place so had to lash them on for real wear. The boots were second-hand, Benetton, nice leather, I think they cost around €8.00. I’d like to claim that I found them, but my mother - the leading lady of the second buyings, was the proud spotter of these. The scarf is from Zara, a gift from Dave.

More posts on the way. Loads more. In fact I think I may take a day off other work soon and put together the twelve pending posts in various folders on my desktop. Is anyone else wondering how they managed to do so much before the holiday?

P.S  I’m aware that I look tipsy/hungover in all of these photos. Berlin. It really is SOME city.  Photos by Dave Coffey. x

I hope you all had a lovely holiday, sorry for the extended break from the blog but I toddled off to Berlin for New Year’s Eve. It was my first week off in quite some time and it was fantastic. blanaid-christmas-wonderful-life

What a year. I think, if I am lucky enough to be kicking around in forty years time, I shall look back on 2010 as really…well…really quite mental. All I can say is that, as I write this, I am feeling most fortunate. I can’t explain it - I just want to make life a person I can hug. (Luckily I have someone in my life who embodies so much of all I love about the world, and I get to hug him quite frequently. So that’s pleasant…) ; )

Thank you to those of you have joined me on the HIGHS! and LOWS! of life on this blog over the last twelve months, and to those who have sent positive thoughts, and heartfelt messages, and genuine support. I appreciate it so very much.

* * * * *

To the help part…well, it’s actually to do with those same positive thoughts…

I would like to make the next Fancy Friday, published on the 14th of January, a very special one, as it’s the 50th Fancy Friday.

If you could leave a comment, send me an anonymous mail, or a link, or a FB chat, or a skype or a pigeon carrier message or get your mum to call my mum… with a quote, saying, or something you wrote, that has inspired you in some way. You can also tell us why and how it helped if you like, the circumstances etc. Do feel free to share with us in as few or many words as you like.

Also, if you’re a photographer or an artist, mail us some stuff if  you would like us to include your work in the 50th Fancy Friday on the 14th.

That’s all there is to it…! If you don’t mind being linked to, I shall link to you. if you prefer to remain anonymous, just say the word.

Have a wonderful, wonderful Christmas.

Love, Blanaid

Some images from the shop launch day - by Ciúin Tracey. We had a lovely day and have been incredibly busy since Saturday, hence the lack of posting! Thanks so much to everyone who visited, purchased and said nice things…we look forward to seeing you in the New Year! For all the other thank yous, and there are so many, many heartfelt than yous, please see the post below. : ) Oh and Kay from K Kajoux will be back in January, for those of you who fell in love with her jewellery!

final_shutterbug

I’m very excited and tired - this Saturday, at 11am, we’ll open our new little second-hand & hand-made shop. It’s not full of crazy prices or scariness, just nice and pleasant…like most of the lovely shops down here in Kilkenny! So if you do come down this Saturday (I’m making mulled cider!) - take some time to visit Butterslip, Smoking Lily, Rebekah Patterson, Bridies, the Made in Kilkenny pop-up shop, the charity shop, Yesterdays, the lovely book shops  - and so much more! That’s just the city centre - venture to bennetsbride, Castlecomer, Thomastown etc for more lovely craft stores. I’m like an advertisement for Kilkenny, but I do love this town. I mean city… ; )

Hope to see you on Satutday - I want to say a huge thank you to Rhona Nolan for the poster! One of my favourite bloggers, I also love her graphic skills.  She’s also been a great help this week. Thanks also to Brid Leahy,  Ciuin Treacy, Aisling Tobin Christina Byrne, Aran Hennessy, Moselle Foley and Frances Long for all of their work over the last year. Phenomenal people, really.  A special mention of course to Eoin Hennessy, the unsung hero who works seven days a week and all the hours he can say yes to, just so we can stay going on this adventure.

While I’m on my thanks roll, my parents don’t read my blog, but they’re incredible. Really. My sister Roisin for making me far much more cleverer about some things.. ; ) and Dave for listening very patiently and calmly when I realise I’ve let myself in for even more work.  Sometimes there are even tears. No bother to him, he’s a very good listener!

Also, genuinely to those of you who comment, and mail, and just say nice things, whether you’re a friend or a stranger of sorts - well, you’re lovely.

Mostly though, even with the odd tear, and late night, and frustrated phone call - I love it all, and I am very, very happy. I hope you are too, for any and every reason at all.

It’s so easy to get consumed by how much the world is affecting you emotionally, while living in blissful ignorance as to how you affect the emotional state of everyone in your world. Next time a problem arises, decide again who you’re going to be - the one who consumes the energy and time of everyone around them, or the one who can face adversity with a certain elegance, acceptance, and ability to move on. We can be whoever we want to be in our reactions to situations. It’s just a choice. It’s always a choice. I know this is a repeated subject - but I always need to remind myself. I want to keep trying, very hard, to make the right choice.

AT HOME WITH ANNE BARBER

For the second ‘at-home’ feature in the Irish Independent Weekend magazine, photographer Dylan Vaughan and I visited the beautiful Anne Barber at home.  Anne owns one of my favourite shops - Butterslip in Kilkenny ( where I procured the necklace and brooches for the Sunday Times feature!) This feature was a great excuse to satisfy my curiosity - I’ve often wondered what her home looks like, considering how imaginative her shop is…I wasn’t disappointed.

Here’s the interview below, more after the jump!

xBlanaid

A VINTAGE WONDERLAND

Anne Barber has become incredibly adept at creating stylish places from tired old properties. She transformed an old angling store in Kilkenny in to ‘Butterslip’, a shop that has become somewhat of a destination for those seeking beautiful trinkets and objects for the home and wardrobe, a ‘treasure trove’ of a store in the true meaning of the term.

Her home, pictured here, is also the result of this ability. Once a simple council terraced house from the 60s, as Anne describes it - “perfectly proportioned mini house,” is now a vintage haven of incredible style. The colourful mish-mash of furniture and accessories creates an overwhelming feeling of comfort, antiquity and delicate sophistication.

It’s easy to shine by putting other people in the shade. Anyone can do that. Try shining just as you are, with all that you have, without feeling the need to stand on others to reach the top. Just be all you can be. That’s all there is to it. Everything else is just short-term glory felt only by you for a little minute before the anxiety sets in again. You’re the only person in this competition to be the best you. You’ve already won.
