So there I am now on the cover of the Sunday Times Home supplement. I was in London when my friend Dave text me to say I was on the cover. I stopped breathing for quite a while. QUITE a while. The Sunday Times is something of a bible type situation for me. We’ve been buying it in every household I’ve lived in for as long as my memory can remember.

Anyway, back to the start of the story - this was a group shoot we did for the Oxfam project, organised by the lovely Dara Flynn (who not only writes for the Sunday Times, is editor of House and Home magazine but also upcycled a piece for the project.) The photographer, Brian Meade was in great form and we had a bit of fun when trying to do some kind of ‘different’ pose with a chair. The shot on the cover was following Brian’s direction of ‘You’re the 50 foot woman! You’re knocking down buildings!’ etc… Of course, I always forget people will actually see the result of leaping about chairs for photos, but I think he did a pretty cool job - it’s certainly different anyway, and I do like different! :) Absolutely amazing coverage for this worthwhile project - you can still bid on the pieces >here< Please do forward that link on to anyone you think may be interested - it’s all for a good cause!

Once again - a huge thank you to Dara Flynn, the Sunday Times, Brian Meade and Oxfam of course for asking me to take part.

The ‘out-take’ photo below the group shot is courtesy of Oxfam!

I was quite flattered to be asked to take part in the Oxfam Home DIY project, alongside:

Angela Scanlon (stylist and journalist),

Eoin Lyons (interior designer & journalist),

Dara Flynn (editor of House & Home & journalist with the Sunday Times)

 Teresa Martin Varela (photographer

Fink (street artist)

and Kevin Sharkey (Artist

We were invited to choose a piece of Oxfamhome furniture and jazz it up however we saw fit, which sounded like great fun…and..well… it was!

To begin, I had a great chat with Paul Houlihan, the manager of Oxfam Home on Francis St. in Dublin. We decided that I should go for this antique chair - it was an interesting shape, but just shabby enough to benefit from some affection and love. Farrow & Ball were kind enough to sponsor the Oxfam - so I chose ‘Downpipe’ - while the new fabric is the remainder of the vintage coffee bean sacks from our armchairs in Shutterbug. It was a very well-behaved chair to work with - from the start of the sanding to the final touches, it took around 6 hours to complete.

A huge thank you to the talented crew from Studioseventyseven for taking the ‘after ‘photos of the chair and I, which appear in this month’s TATLER magazine.  Thanks also to Ciúin Treacy for the before photo…and to Clare from Oxfam for thinking of me… I also very much enjoyed meeting everyone involved in the project too. Lovely folks altogether!

The pieces are on display this month in the Powerscourt Town House Centre in Dublin, as part of the Oxfam Haiti Lives Photography exhibition.

You can bid on all of the finished pieces *** HERE **** Please do send around this link if you know of anyone interested in upcycled pieces in aid of such a worthwhile charity.

*Update* Proper photos hot off the Eoin press!

Our new studio in Kilkenny is opening on Friday - so we are up against the clock to get it finished! Here’s a little bit of the studio - the seating area…

Chairs: I bought the vintage coffee bean bags from Donkee House on etsy.com. These are a very soft, worn grain, so quite comfortable and not itchy in the slightest…the chairs were two old, horribly dirty things that were being thrown out - introduce one hot glue gun and a staple gun, along with eight hours, abit of Mary Chapin Carpenter and Sigur Ros to invoke patience and hey presto - my new favourite things!

Couches: The couches were cheap, hugely comfortable but covered in an incredibly un-lovely leather. Ripped off the leather, covered the base in €10 painting dust sheets from Pat Mc Donnell paints (again, thank you staple and glue guns), covered the cushions in leftover grain sacks, topped with sheepskin from Ikea and throws from TK Maxx bargain section - which were only €15.00 each! Love the mix of floral and geometric too. Entirely accidental, found each throw in two separate TK’s…

Coffee Table: I had intended to buy industrial castors to make a base for a palette coffee table. While in TK Maxx I found a be-castored table in the sale section for 50 quid! Trundled it home and begged towo silvered palettes from the lovely Jerry and Killian in Historic Interiors, Lusk. (More on their store in later posts, got SO much stuff there, fantastic place.) Eoin drilled them in place and hey presto - random coffee table alert! Sheepskin rug on floor from Ikea, 60’s style straw rugs beside chairs from Nicholas Mosse.

Hope you like it all so far! Lots more photos and details soon!

blanaid-studio-moodboard-1

As some of you may know, my brother Eoin and I are opening a new photography studio in Kilkenny. We managed to lease the ground floor of an old bank, as it needed a lot of work. Huge space, with a front room that was previously divided in two, a back room, which was also divided in two, and a big, old, proper walk-in safe, which was being used as a small canteen.  It’s currently being ripped apart, walls taken down, carpets lifted, painted, furniture being made etc…with exciting discoveries being made along the way - the carpet, after much ungluing, revealed an antique mosaic floor and maple floorboards. One partition wall was hiding an original cast iron supporting pillar, and underneath the paint and glue in the safe, we discovered granite walls and flooring. We have an incredible team working with us, so it’s ticking along nicely.

Above are the before photos and the mood board I’m working from…here’s some info:

The table : I designed a table using some old scaffolding I found on my Dad’s farm, my uncle is a bit of a genius, so he put it all together, and topped it with some rustic style plywood.

The chairs : I love the Eero Saarinen tulip armchairs, but ’til I have more spondoolicks, it’s reproductions for me (shock! horror! philistine! etc.)

The couch : I rounded up some free furniture and ordered vintage coffee bean sacks online. I’m going to upholster the couch and perhaps one of the four armchairs in this fabric, with sheepskin rugs on the seating area to make it more comfortable.

The flooring : I’ve ordered a jupex floor oil with white pigment from a Scandinavian housing company. Fingers crossed it comes up nice and chalky. I’ll seal it with floor wax to keep it matte.

The lockers : I got a huge amount of old metal lockers from a hospital in Dublin, they were giving them away on DublinWaste.ie. I’m painting each door in a different shade from the Dulux Simply Colour paint card. They’ll house collections of magazines and books for our coffee customers to browse through.

The studio : The shooting space will be all white, with a cyclorama, and plenty of vintage props.

Coffee Table : Also made by my uncle, reclaimed floorboards on a palette base, with industrial castors.

Shelving : Made from palettes and scrap metal, found in the partition walls we tore down.

Make Up Room : This is now in the old walk-in safe, theatre lightbulbs surround a large mirror, with the worktable constructed from scaffolding bars and plywood. (Hanging rails inspired by the lovely lot over at Eat Live Shop.)

Seating Area : We want it to be comfortable, inviting… particularly if we decide to open a small coffee shop with free wifi. We want it to be a space where people can hold informal creative thinky-talky sessions, or read some books, or do some work, or just watch the people walk by the incredibly large and lovely windows.

Partitions : As the front room is now one big space, we may need some privacy to get our work done. We’re going to make free standing, portable screens/partitions, either from old doors, or corrugated perspex to allow the light in…

W.C : It’s small but has a nice window, what more can you really ask for from a W.C?! It will either go all light and vintage, or covered in old newspaper wallpaper.

The walls have been painted in Clay from the Dulux Simply Colour Range, I love the shade - I wanted as close to white as possible, but with a bit of interest.

That’s it so far, it should be finished soon - feel free to pop in, say hello and take a look when it is..!

As you may or may not know, I’ve written a couple of interiors features for the Irish Independent (< click to read the first article)recently; where I take a property that’s for sale and give it a hypothetical makeover using products sourced from around Ireland and the internet.

Soooo…over the next few weeks, I’m going to post all of the products I’ve found on my trawls, in the hopes they may be of some use, even if it’s just to look at…!

I’ll also upload the PDF’s of the articles when I get an afternoon..

I’m so sorry for my absence from the blog, I am currently in the middle of moving to Dublin! Luc, Heather and I moved in last night, and are right in the middle of completely re-doing the place….ripping all the  carpets up, painting walls white, taking down curtains, fixing shutters and putting in furniture etc as it was completely unfurnished, which I love. Thanks to Andrew Clancy for the photos! (I, of course, neglected to take before photos but it was yellow walls and wine carpet galore…)

*It really is a work in progress, the mirror above the fire is still on it’s backing, another single divan bed/sofa thing will be going beside the fireplace, more rugs about the place etc etc etc..!

In one of the shots, you can see Mr.Pete Fagan hard at work, he started helping me on Tuesday morning and he’s still here, loading vans, pulling up nails, and eh…heading out for a few pints now. He’s a legend! Also, a huge thanks to my sister Roisin, brothers Eoin and Aran, Andrew Clancy, Laura Cunningham, Heather , Catherine and Danny Condren and Lucianne White for all of their help. Starbars.

This is my 16th move in the last ten years, the last being just six months ago. I think it’s safe to say I’m done. Feel free to remind me of this in about 8 months time, when I might be on the road again.

blanaid

Welcome to my blog! Allow myself to introduce myself, my name is Blanaid Hennessy. I used to be the only Blanaid Hennessy and then some other Blanaid bird in Waterford married a guy called Richard Hennessy (no relation, to me, or her…) and now there are two Blanaid Hennessys…but! I have devised a cunning plan to beat her in google, and that is to type Blanaid Hennessy a lot in this post. Take that Blanaid Hennessy (2)!!! I’m not saying that I hope they get divorced….(joking!)

At this stage in internetting history, there is no real need to go into a big boring spiel about what I intend to do on here, save for the fact that it is expected of me to do just that in the very first post…so I shall.

I’ll be posting on: outfits, shoots, interiors, design, media, photoshop tutorials, stuff I’m selling, a song I like, shoes I fancy, boys that are nice and other randomness and frivolity that is completely and totally unnecessary.

Sometimes I’ll post on an outfit I’ll be wearing, other times on a shoot in a magazine I liked, or I’ll feature a house I’ve been working on…as I said - randomness and frivolity, randomness and frivolity. Good times.

I’ll be updating most days, so please, add me to your bookmarks and come pay a visit every now and again.
