1234567Part two of Italy. Firstly - where we stayed after MUCH perusal through Trip Advisor reviews:

Rome - the IQ hotel. Perfect location, SO close to a metro stop. Small but exceptionally planned contemporary room. Blackout blinds. Safe in the room, amazing water pressure/heat in the shower. Only downside? We are massive herbal(me)/regular tea drinkers so we will have a special kettle rating. No kettle in the room? Goodbye one star. Oh yes. We ARE that Irish. Sorry.

Venice - Becher hotel. As opposite a style of room to the IQ as one could fathom. Plush, warm, spacious, a BATH and big windows that opened right on to the canal. Shutters for total darkness, though not sufficient to block out the rather loud boats - but hey, no major complaints from us on that. We were sleeping right beside a canal. In Venice. It was amazing.  Oh - no kettle. Dammit. Also, avoid Venice in the Winter. After the initial atmospheric awesomeness of the mist and the canal, it is incredibly cold.  It was still a beautiful place, but it would be beautiful in the non-baltic Springtime too.

Florence - Palazzo Tolomei. This place is incredible. Really, truly - from arrival, where we were treated in such a full on manner that we genuinely double checked that they hadn’t mistaken us for celebrity guests. Genuinely. We also had to double check our booking to make sure they hadn’t confused our room, as we were shown to the nicest hotel room I have EVER stayed in… The superior double, which had a view of the Duomo, boasted not only the FLIPPING KETTLE but also a fully stocked kitchenette including a microwave, cutlery, delf etc. Add to this the dining area, sitting area, pretty plush shower room and a dvd player - and you have quite the home away from home.

The owner, a delightfully eccentric French lady, presented us with a pice of her own artwork upon our departure. We were invited to have an apertif with them every evening. Honestly, I could gush some more so instead I shall offer two small downsides just to make sure this is all genuine etc. The room was big and old and therefore chilly. This won’t be an issue if you visit in warmer times, so not a big deal. The windows were big and old and therefore not great on the old sound levels. This is not an issue if, like us you brought ear plugs.

That is my little hotel round up, hope it’s helpful if you’re planning your own trip.

Oh and more on each city itself in the next post.

I recently travelled to Italy - my first ever visit there, part work, part play. We travelled to Rome, which was intensely amazing, Venice , which was atmospheric - and then on to Florence, which was just cool. It was like holidaying in a live-action version of The Sartorialist.

Here are some images from my days there - with a couple more posts to follow, a little collection. So many odd or interesting or astounding things to capture, so little time when stuffing one’s face with Straciatella gelato. I’ll add notes about where we stayed etc to the next posts, just in case you’re currently concocting a travel plan.

Italy - I heart you.

P.S Discovering the Canadian maple leaf graffiti was poignant as my time away clashed with a sudden, unplanned, yet with reason, visit from my Canad-ia residing sister, who’s a total doll.

10-blanaidThis blog is slowly becoming an occassional travel diary. My apologies, but I’m either flat out working or getting gone. My determination to be outside at least five weeks out of fifty two is on track. For one who never travelled much at all, this year I appear to be constantly planning the next trip.

All the clichés are true - it is important  for my little tiny mind to get away. I come back rested, inspired and ready to work. That, of course, could also be down to the perpetual guilt of the self-employed person who has to quantify every hour away from work. Whichever - it’s good to get gone and get back.

1-london-blanaid2345-london-blanaid6-london-blanaid7-london-blanaidThis time last week I was covered in mud at the Lovebox festival in London. This event, (the music, not the mud )is quickly becoming the highlight of my year  - it’s just too much fun for serious. While on a day-after, fake-energy buzz, we wandered toward Portobello, the promise of Humming Bird cafe red velvet cupcakes being the main trigger for the wander. I became slightly obsessed by the flowers along the way, although the beautifully decrepit door was found in Stratford.

As I may have mentioned (around four hundred times before…) I am currently away in Los Angeles. Actually, at this time of typing, I am in Las Vegas. We came here for a holiday within a holiday, as L.A. is part work, and it was €53.00 return to fly to Vegas from L.A…so…here we are!

It’s my first visit to Las Vegas, and all the warnings of the mentalness have proved true. It’s demented here. No complaints though.

I am a huge fan of typography, so couldn’t resist a visit to the renowned ‘Neon Graveyard.’ This lot on the outskirts of town is filled with rusting hotel & casino signs from the last century. Many of the designs are just astounding - one, for the Moulin Rouge, was the actual handwriting of the renowned designer Betty Willis.

it’s a short tour - the place is smaller than expected, but it’s enough. You are in the desert after all, and the 11am heat can be overpowering, but I am so glad we went…I have a feeling the studio signage will be changing dramatically once I get home!

More posts from L.A. to follow…I want to live there.

P.S While I took the above photos, the Neon Museum restricts any commercial use of these images - I have to tell you so now you’re done told! : )

blanaid-la-holidayTrying to figure out this polyvore malarkey to plan my perfect suitcase for Los Angeles. Not sure the images should be so pixellated once posted but I’m more than likely doing something wrong. Here’s the link to the original anyway!

Here’s my actual version of the dream above. (Considerably less money spent…) Outfit posts will follow from L.A. featuring the stuff mentioned below and hopefully some new bits, as I’m heading over to buy/work also…! I will try not to go on about it too much, but I’ve never been and I’m quite ridiculously excited!

Vintage sweatshirt - mine has a gold eagle on it - present from Dave.

Maxi skirt - Vintage - €5.00.

Kimono - the one pictured  is Winter Kate. I’ve become obsessed with kimonos and bought my vintage velvet one on ebay for €59.00.

I am absolutely determined to travel more this year. I am one of those people who chose not to do the South America/Australia jaunts when young as I wanted to work work work. I figured I’d be so amazingly rich by the age of 30 (ancient!) if I worked hard from 18, that I’d be visiting South America in a gold-plated plane. Well-thought out plan, right?

Unfortunately, I’ve done really very little but work since making that decision, and, added to a sudden (aged 24) inexplicable phobia of flying, I have been limited to occasional escapades to France and London. Things have changed somewhat now though. I have, with the help of a kinesiologist, managed to overcame 94% of my fear of flying, and I have a partner-in-crime type who loves adventures as much as I do…so I feel ready to embrace the airport and get on planes to explore and be inspired and meet new people and do things that don’t involve a laptop.

To keep me motivated to do just that, I’m going to start a little collection of vintage tourism posters featuring the countries I really want to visit. Oh and any recommendations for places I really should visit eventually, I’d love to hear them!

I’m very excited and tired - this Saturday, at 11am, we’ll open our new little second-hand & hand-made shop. It’s not full of crazy prices or scariness, just nice and pleasant…like most of the lovely shops down here in Kilkenny! So if you do come down this Saturday (I’m making mulled cider!) - take some time to visit Butterslip, Smoking Lily, Rebekah Patterson, Bridies, the Made in Kilkenny pop-up shop, the charity shop, Yesterdays, the lovely book shops  - and so much more! That’s just the city centre - venture to bennetsbride, Castlecomer, Thomastown etc for more lovely craft stores. I’m like an advertisement for Kilkenny, but I do love this town. I mean city… ; )

Hope to see you on Satutday - I want to say a huge thank you to Rhona Nolan for the poster! One of my favourite bloggers, I also love her graphic skills.  She’s also been a great help this week. Thanks also to Brid Leahy,  Ciuin Treacy, Aisling Tobin Christina Byrne, Aran Hennessy, Moselle Foley and Frances Long for all of their work over the last year. Phenomenal people, really.  A special mention of course to Eoin Hennessy, the unsung hero who works seven days a week and all the hours he can say yes to, just so we can stay going on this adventure.

While I’m on my thanks roll, my parents don’t read my blog, but they’re incredible. Really. My sister Roisin for making me far much more cleverer about some things.. ; ) and Dave for listening very patiently and calmly when I realise I’ve let myself in for even more work.  Sometimes there are even tears. No bother to him, he’s a very good listener!

Also, genuinely to those of you who comment, and mail, and just say nice things, whether you’re a friend or a stranger of sorts - well, you’re lovely.

Mostly though, even with the odd tear, and late night, and frustrated phone call - I love it all, and I am very, very happy. I hope you are too, for any and every reason at all.

James Vincent McMorrow

Mick Flannery

Rhob Cunningham

* * * * *

We were lucky enough to be allocated tickets for the free gig to celebrate Set Theatre’s first birthday last night - and it was absolutely amazing! It was like a mini-Electric Picnic, except with seats, a choice of alcohol, and y’know, central heating. : )

Highlights? So many, but James Vincent McMorrow and Mick Flannery clinch it…I have been slightly in love with James Vincent McMorrow’s music since the Rhythm and Roots festival here in Kilkenny, saw him at Electric Picnic and was delighted at the prospect of seeing him again at Set - and yes, he was just superb.  He’s playing Set again in November, tickets are €15.00 and honestly, if I never recommend another thing in my life, please consider making this a night out for yourself. Set is a brilliant venue and he is just a brilliant man. * sigh *

My cousin has long been extolling the virtues of Mick Flannery, and I didn’t really take heed, ’til last night. Mother of God. He is incredible.

Also…. Lisa Hannigan was beautiful and her vocals as amazing as ever, but her Jonsi-like version of ‘Personal Jesus’ was pretty phenomenal.  Jerry Fish - kind of fell in love with him. Rhob Cunningham - BRILLIANT and quite hilarious.

I could go on and on, but I’ll leave you with some links and hope that you enjoy them. Oh, and Happy Birthday Set! ; )

Roxy Rhinestone is one of Ireland most established Burlesque performers and has been performing nationally and internationally since 2005. Her performances combine elements of classic burlesque with a modern comic twist.  The good news for those of you interested in learning some skills of a sultry-shaking-it nature is that Roxy will be passing on her knowledge of performance and tease in a 3 hour workshop for beginners!

All props will be provided, except nipple tassels (<one of my most favourite sentences on this blog ever!!)…. So if you have some bring them and if not there will be some available for sale at the class at prices from 20 euro upwards.

The class is on this Saturday, 28th August , starting at 10am until 1pm and will cost 35 euro per person.

Places are limited so book now by emailing Roxy at roxyrhinestone@gmail.com

If I wasn’t working at the Ultimate Girls’ Day Out in the RDS this weekend, I think I’d toddle along myself!

Isn’t it looovely…! This was the kitschy loveliness of part of the Terence Conran shop in Arnotts, which had been especially created for the Fashion Bloggers’ Brunch on Saturday. Annmarie O’Connor of I Blog Fashion did another wonderful job of organising this, one of my favourite events to attend. Sarah in Arnotts made sure that the bloggers en masse had their fill of afternoon tea…oh and the goody bags, well, they were very generous indeed…. more…

I’m a big fan of Anthony Burrill - his prints please me enormously, so much so, I even went and spent my hard earned monies on one for my flat  >> see it here <<

So I was particularly pleased to hear, that not only witll Mr. Burrill be one of the creative talkers at Offset, he has also designed a range of exclusive menswear t-shirts (above) that will be sold in BT2 Grafton Street, from today, Monday til the 9th November. I shall be making a purchase.

In addition to the BT2 T-shirts,  he’s designed a window wrap that will adorn the windows of BT2 Grafton Street for two weeks.   I can’t WAIT to see that…

A very delayed post - I attended the Fashion Bloggers’ Brunch on Saturday in BT2 on Saturday, which was an incredibly pleasant way to spend a Saturday morning!

The event was organised once again by the lovely Annmarie O’Connor from ‘I Blog Fashion’, who was also giving her style master class : ‘Fashion Me Fabulous’, in Kildare Village the same weekend. (I popped down to it after the brunch, and it really is a master class in the capsule wardrobe - check out her next ones, I’ll post the dates.)

Aoife and Analeigh from BT2 made us feel very welcome, with lots of fancy pastries, treats and much needed cuppa teas…they also very kindly presented us all with a gift card for the store. I promptly used it toward  the studded Lipsy jacket, featured in the shoot with Andrew Clancy. Nice

Bloggers new and regular all attended, including:

New to the brunch - the lovely bloggers :Nicky from Nicky’s Rag Tales, Alice from White Rabbit  and Kathy from Style Strutter (who has the coolest tattoo!)

The incredibly dapper gentlemen : Cillian from Male Mode, Garrett from Indigo & Cloth (LOVE the new website!) and Conor from networking site Connector.ie

The very stylish ladies : Arsheen from Fashion Filosofy, Sinead from The Savvy Shopper, Aoife from Beaut.ie and Catherine from This is an Off Shoot

Lovely to see everyone again, check out their blogs if you’re a-wandering about the intraweb, and thank you to BT2!

irish-fashion-bloggers-lunch2-blanaid

I’ve taken it upon myself to shorten the Irish Fashion Bloggers’ to the I.F.B  in the title of this post -  I like how it makes us sound like a Secret Service or something. A covert underground sect of fashion ninjas that attend clandestine meetings once a month to secretly plot their onslaught on the blogosphere. Yeah - that sounds dramatic. I like it. Oh wait…I’m reliably informed the Irish Film Board have this as their eh…secret code name. Dammit.

…While it isn’t remotely as dangerous as that, the Irish Fashion Bloggger’s Brunch IS a lovely thing to do of a once-a-month day, and this month was especially special. It was the anniversary of the very first one, organised then and still by the lovely Annmarie O’Connor of IBlogFashion. She had arranged a special treat for all of us on Sunday to commemorate the occassion, upstairs in the First Floor Restaurant in Harvey Nichols, in the Dundrum Shopping Centre.

The Food & Drink.

The head chef Thomas Haughton had prepared a special menu to celebrate the anniversary. There was a mixed summer berry starter, followed by an assiette of Harvey Nichols amouse bouches..which was a plate full of teeny tiny samples of the Harvey Nichols brunch selection - my favourite way to eat - little bits of everything. Then there was the big juicy lump of meat that was the chargrilled beef skewer and for dessert there was a mango and passionfruit cheesecake served with a selection of sliced exotic fruits. There was also a hell of a lot of Bellinis and Bloody Marys, but as I was heading to a christening in Greystones after, I stuck with the lovely, chilled, freshly squeezed orange juice.

The Goody Bags.

Free Stuff! The people at Harvey Nichols Press Department were seriously generous. The bags were stuffed with :

TWO Nars full sized glow and matte foundations. A Benefit Blusher. Liz Earle SPF and suncare stuff. James Brown Hair Serum. False eyelashes. Collagen facelift marshmallows (!!) Elemis face mask and lots of other samples and delights. Good times. Thank you!

The Peoples.

Such a lovely selection of people from blogs across the country, that are heading into my blog roll… including the very dapper Cillian from Male-Mode, Dublin Streets, Fashion Filosofy, Bluebirds are so Natural, Indigo & Cloth, and loads of others…oh and a big congratulations to Aisling from Beaut.ie on the publication of her new book!

Me outfit.

**IMAGE TAKEN FROM THE BLOG : DUBLIN STREETS!**

Managed to sleep on the ‘hair’ (see below) for the five hours that I got to bed on Saturday night. Had to have a shower with a tesco bag on my head though. Not over my face…that would have been silly. The lovely Dublin Streets took my photo for their street style blog - thrilled! Check it out  > here! < on their blog! The outfit was a veritable, and unusual for me, feast from the High Street:

Harem trousers : Topshop

Gladiator Sandals : River Island

Boy’s jacket : Oxfam

Man’s belt : River island

Cropped Vest : Topshop

Finally, a huge thank you to Annmarie for the invitation, and for all of her organisational skills! It was a total success.

irish-fashion-bloggers-lunch-blanaid

I was verrrrrry excited to be invited to the Irish Fashion Bloggers Brunch on Saturday in the Marks and Spencers restaurant, Grafton St. I missed the start as I was at a styling workshop (more on that later..), so arrived all a-late and a-fluster, but not to worry- they were SUCH a lovely bunch of bloggers! Annmarie O’Connor of IBlogFashion organises the monthly meet up, each time in a different venue, and she does quite the marvellous job. The table was an eclectic mix of people from fashion, shopping, culture and streetstyle blogs including among others : Bluebirds Are So NaturalAngela Scanlon Beaut.ie, The Savvy Shopper, Perk Up Vintage Clothing and  Dublin Streets.

The food was really incredibly good (*note to self, leave car at home to partake in the Cava*) - particularly the Eton mess dessert. Next time you’re on Grafton Street, call up for this light, sweet simple tumble of strawberries, cream and meringue. Actually…eh..I think I need to go to Grafton St. today for emmm…something!

Such a lovely day out, check out the Irish bloggers, there are some fantastic writers and archivists out there on our little green island…
